When liberalism's influences convince much of the American Church to reject the Bible's infallibility, a group of pastors fights back by crafting a statement defending biblical inerrancy, hoping that others will follow and join the fight against a movement that, if successful, would snuff out the Biblical Church in America as we know it.

In the mid-20th century, the rise of Liberalism within the American church challenged the very foundation of Biblical faith, casting doubt on the infallibility of Scripture and posing a critical question: Would the American church stand firm or fall victim to the same fate as its European counterparts, ultimately succumbing to humanism and leaving a spiritual void? The choice was clear; the church had to either embrace the authority of God's Word or risk irrelevance in the face of modernity.
Contemporary Biblical scholars reflect on this pivotal moment in the 1970s and honor the visionary leadership of R.C. Sproul, who rallied a courageous band of pastors and scholars. Undeterred by the specter of ostracism, these individuals stood resolute in their commitment to defending the truth of Scripture and its undeniable reliability. With unshakeable determination, they championed the cause of biblical inerrancy, culminating in the historic Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy (CSBI). This declaration was not merely a theological statement; it was a rallying cry, positioning the church to confront the rising tide of skepticism head-on.

Opponents of the CSBI raised alarms, claiming it would alienate the church from modern society. They argued that integrating contemporary ideas—from evolution to humanist philosophies—was essential for remaining relevant. Yet, in stark contrast, the architects of the CSBI passionately asserted that straying from biblical truth could spell disaster for the American Church, just as it had in Europe. They stood firm in their conviction that the Bible is divinely inspired, with God as its ultimate author. It carries supreme authority in all matters of faith, practice, and knowledge it addresses. They also asserted that the Scriptures, in their original manuscripts, are without error or contradiction in everything they affirm, including history, science, and theology.
The scholars narrating this story of the church in the 1970s tirelessly delve into these critical issues, seeking steadfast evidence to uphold the truth of Scripture against the backdrop of modern skepticism. As they recount the story of the CSBI, their journeys take them across the globe—to ancient libraries, archaeological sites, and the dimly lit caves of the Middle East—each location offering profound implications for the veracity of the Bible. Their explorations illuminate the Bible's origins and argue for its truthfulness.

While our present-day scholars tell the story of the CSBI and explore the modern-day evidence, the central theme of the Bible—the transformative story of the Messiah—unfolds, springboarding off of the truths revealed in the Bible. The story of the Messiah laced throughout the 66 books of the Bible is there from the beginning of this story to the end and becomes the strongest argument for the truthfulness of God’s Word. The intertwining of Scripture's central theme about the Messiah and his life-altering significance highlights a profound truth: the stakes for the American Church and, indeed, for all humanity are far greater than most comprehend.
These three narrative threads—the struggle for inerrancy in the late 20th century, the scholarly quest for supporting evidence, and the enduring story of the Messiah—converge into a powerful climax. The resolution not only reflects a momentous pushback against Liberalism in the 20th century but also reveals the precarious status of the church today. More importantly, it is a stark reminder of the Messiah, who paid the ultimate price for sin and will one day return to judge the world.
